Introduction to the Department
The department was established in 1997. The purpose of establishing this department is to train students in using Language for practical workforce usages. It expects to afford the increasing needs in many professions and careers, such as international business, English commercial correspondence management, bilingual teaching, tourism, foreign affairs, public relations, reception, among many others.
I. Curriculum and Goal:
The major curriculums focus on international business and traveling English. We provide curriculums to learn how to teach English and Chinese too. Besides English, we also offer the second foreign language learning in languages such as Japanese, French, Spanish and Korean. We also instruct and reward students to take the relative exams of English ability and professional certification to promote the competition of obtaining employment. Guide students to pass the certification exams with international recognition (TOEFL, TOEIC, BULATS) including business management (LCCIEB).
The first year focuses on the basic English skills such as listening, speaking, reading, writing, and pronunciation. The second to fourth years focuses on professional courses, including “International Business and Tourism Course” and Bilingual Teaching Courses. Another foreign language such as Japanese, French, Spanish, or Korean are encouraged. Oher elective courses provide students with certificates in English proficiency or professional licenses. This enhances employment and international competitiveness. We offer tutoring in language skills and certificate preparation sessions to prepare students in taking standardized tests.
II.Teaching equipment and laboratories:
The department’s space plan includes the Departmental Office, 11 faculty offices, 2 general teaching classrooms, 4 professional teaching classrooms, and 3 Chinese teaching classrooms. Its setting functions and important equipment are as follows:
1. Department Office: provides assistance to teachers and students.
2. Teacher research room: equipped with air-conditioners, reference materials, an environment for student-teacher conferences, and digital conferencing.
3. General classroom’s equipment: Small groups to focus on student’s fundamental skills for required courses. In order to improve the quality of teaching, all general teaching classrooms has a multimedia podium for digital teaching. All classrooms have air-conditioning and a wireless network.
4. Professional classroom:
*Amphitheatre and small theater: In addition to providing drama courses in this department, it is also used for related lectures or teaching.
*Language Self-study Center: This classroom has modern audiovisual equipment and computers for students to self-study during their free time. Since the 2017 academic year, the classroom has transformed by adopting a problem-based learning (PBL) model, upgrading the projection equipment, and installing wide-angle webcams to support synchronous group video instruction. The classroom is furnished with 25 computers for teaching and tutoring purposes, with full internet connectivity throughout.
*Interpretation classroom: It provides interpretation-related courses and is also used as an English learning guide center, relevant assemblies, seminars or discussions for all students. Facilities include professional oral translation classroom and multimedia computer classrooms.
*Multimedia computer language classroom: Audiovisual classroom with 56 computers and a computer teaching system for language, information, business, and multimedia courses.
5. Chinese professional classroom: The foreign students of our school have implemented the “1 + 3 Chinese Professional Course.” After one year study in the Chinese language, the next 3 years will be in the professional courses in the department. We encourage students to take other department’s optional professional courses of other domain in order to integrate the foreign language skills and professional knowledge. It only wants to cultivate the outstanding professionals of foreign language.
III. Graduation:
Graduated students will have taken international business and tourism courses. Optional bilingual teaching or professional language courses are offered for students to take. Many courses offer practical skills for internships which can expand students’ employment competitiveness in the workforce.
The educational goals of this department include:
1. Cultivate professionals for the workplace industries by strengthening abilities to plan and analyze.
2. Cultivate talents in the fields of administration, reception and service using foreign languages and application skills.
3. Cultivate future teachers in the field of translation and in the field of teaching foreign languages for all ages including preschool education.
4. Cultivate talents who will be competitive in foreign affairs, translation, international trade, marketing, exhibition, hotel management, air service, or in tourism.
